The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for the development of the underwriting strategy for the long term care business for New York Life Insurance Company.  This includes performing an assessment of the current market of Long Term Care (LTC) underwriting, as well as other lines of insurance, in order to develop and implement a strategic plan for underwriting within the LTC business.  This includes analyzing underwriting guidelines, the use of electronic medical records in underwriting and the future digitization of those records, the assessment of alternative forms of electronic data to supplement traditional data (Rx, MIB, APSs) and the use of machine-learning and artificial intelligence to automate various aspects of the underwriting process.  In addition, this position will be responsible for monitoring advancements in underwriting technology to keep New York Life's LTC Business current with medical advances, care delivery and technology.  This position will work closely with the LTC Business Leader, Chief Operating Officer and LTC Underwriting Manager. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides strong leadership, development, vision and strategic direction to the LTC Solutions underwriting function.
  • Represents LTC interests with NYL Underwriting Review Committee (URC)
  • Partners with various departmental heads to set underwriting strategies, drives the transformation of risk selection, while balancing the need to maintain and improve morbidity results and comply with appropriate NYL, insurance and financial services regulations.
  • Manages overall LTC Solutions underwriting risk assessment process
  • Analyze opportunities for continuous process improvement
  • Manage other projects as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 10+ years applicable experience
  • CLU, CLTC designations preferred
  • Understanding of risk factors relating to morbidity risk management and long-term care insurance products and riders 
  • Experience with other morbidity risk products (e.g. disability income) a plus
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible individual life, disability income and/or LTC underwriting experience including highly complex cases
  • Experienced leader with the ability to attract, select, develop and manage the performance of highly skilled professional associates
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to interact effectively within and without the enterprise at all levels to build strong cooperative relationships that drive profitable sales
  • Demonstrated sound business judgment, with history of producing results
  • Customer focus and excellent negotiation, relationship building and influencing skills
  • Ability to understand process, technology, underwriting and service across the various distribution channels                
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities with tight and shifting deadlines
  • Ability to partner with senior management across distribution, operations, product development, finance, etc.
  • Excellent communication skills and presentation skills
  • Experience delivering presentations to associates and senior management
