Position Summary

 

Based in Atlanta, this is a hands-on, lab-based position, focused on the use of CP Kelco hydrocolloids in finished food and beverages, or other applications. The position requires a strong inclination to look at macrosystems on a molecular level, and the application of knowledge in physical properties, rheological instrumentation as well as data analysis and interpretation. Projects are typically long-term and aim to problem solve (e.g. trouble-shooting, ideation, formula optimization), to develop a deep understanding of ingredient structure-function effects in a wide variety of applications, and to find innovative applications for novel CP Kelco products. Projects will involve evaluation, optimization, and understanding of the science and technology behind CP Kelco hydrocolloid solutions within the context of complete formulas and processes to provide the desired functionalities in finished applications. This role requires working with and learning from other R&D functions within CP Kelco, as well as Marketing and Sales teams.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Strong individual contributor who will be key in solving long-term, complex, self-driven projects.
  • Passion for science with a strong background in one of more of the following: hydrocolloid structure-function properties, emulsion science, protein chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry, encapsulation, and/ or food physical chemistry. 
  • Designs and executes well-planned experiments, can analyze complex data, and propose innovative solutions.  Documents experimental results and conclusions completely, in a well-organized fashion and in a timely manner.
  • A team player that incorporates the fundamental knowledge of other R&D functions, as well as creative ideas outside of R&D. 
  • Strong interpersonal and presentation skills to share key learnings both inside and outside the organization.
  • Ensures projects are completed on time, using the proper CP Kelco ingredients for the functionality required and processing techniques that are appropriate for the application.  Ensures reports and presentations provided are of high quality and professional.
  • Participates in technical discussions, both with technical colleagues and customers to share knowledge and experience, providing input for solving challenges.
  • Strong critical thinking skills; continuously develops and applies knowledge gained to new projects and applications.
  • Creative problem-solver.
  • Mentor and train less-experienced colleagues.
  • Works in a safe manner according to the Huber Principles and values.
  • Role includes regional and international travel to trade shows, conferences, customers and other CP Kelco technical sites.

 

Preferred Experience

 

Skills and Knowledge

 

  • Strong Food Science/Food Chemistry background, experience working with hydrocolloids and proteins applications experience. 
  • Fluent in English; excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Must be proactive, energetic, curious, highly motivated to learn, and learn quickly and dynamically when executing daily activities.
  • A team player with outstanding interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter, pays attention to detail, has a sense of urgency.
  • Enjoys a fast-paced environment, positive attitude, and ready to learn.
  • With project needs understood, can work independently to complete the project. 
  • Good creative problem-solving skills.
  • PC literate:  WORD, EXCEL, PPT

 

Education/Experience

 

  • MS in Food Science with 5-7 years of related experience strongly preferred. BS in Food Science with 10+ years of relevant industry experience will be considered.
